Von Berke

Berke family was an old noble family in Vas County (nowdays: Prekmurje, Slovenia). They were landowners and bankers. Noble title is unknown, but they were a part of lower nobility, that means that they held a title of: baron, ritter von, or edler von. On 10. December 1609 Berke Mathyas was elevated into nobility. On 23. March 1678, Berke Péter has received coat of arms by King Leopold I. of Austria. At the end of the 19th century they have established few banks in Vas County. Balaž Berke, Ferenc Berke and Ivan Berke, members of the Berke family were Slovenian writers. Berke József was also a member of Hungarian parliament (he was only 31 years old when he was elected) from 1869–1872, then Count Szápáry has won the elections. But 2 years later Berke has won again 1875-1878 and 1878-1881.
