The voluntary social year in Germany
and Austria
(German Freiwilliges soziales Jahr, abbr. FSJ) is a voluntary replacement for military service that lasts between six to eighteen months. In order for the FSJ to be recognized as a replacement for the compulsory military or civilian service the service duration has to be at least twelve months.
Possible locations are numerous and are all social, charitable or of public utility.
