He sits in the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court. He had previously enjoyed a notable career in civil engineering. Gaining a degree in Engineering Science and Economics from Oriel College, Oxford, he worked with Ove Arup in both London and Libya.

in 1979, joining Keating Chambers in 1981 and taking Silk in 1992. He was declared Construction Silk of the Year by Construction Design in 1992. He served as Bencher of Middle Temple in 2002 and as Head of Chambers (2003–2005). He was appointed to the Queen's Bench Division and received a knighthood in 2005. He is currently the judge in charge of Technology and Construction.
