, the General Assembly redistricted itself and from 1966 to 1970, Arlington County was divided into 2 districts with the 9th District including only the southern portion of the county.

Beginning in 1972, as a result of a regular decennial redistricting, the 9th Senate District was relocated to Richmond and included the eastern side of the City of Richmond. In 1981, the district was expanded to include part of Henrico County, in addition to part of the City of Richmond. In 1992, the district saw Charles City County added to the district which still incorporated part of Henrico County and part of the City of Richmond.

Current boundaries

All Virginia Senate districts were redrawn in 2011 and the 2011 elections are being contested in the these districts. The 9th District includes all of Charles City County, and parts of Henrico County, Hanover County and the City of Richmond. In Henrico County, the district includes all of the eastern side of the county, including the areas of Sandston
