As of 1 November 2011, RKS plates will be substituted with UNMIK issued plates (KS) as a temporary travel arrangement when crossing the Kosovo-Serbia border into Serbia.

UNMIK era

The plates were issued under the administration of UNMIK from 1999 to 2010. Effective 1 November 2011, they will resume to be issued for citizens needing to cross into Serbia, as the latter only accepts these plates and not the new RKS ones. They consist of a three-digit number and a two-letter abbreviation KS, which stands for 'Kosovo', and ended in another three-digit number. An example of a 2001 plate is shown in the picture below (note the year on the left). They stopped to be distributed once the new styled plates started to be issued in early December 2010. However after the fifth round of talks between Pristina and Belgrade, it appears that effective 1 November 2011 UNMIK plates will be issued in Northern Kosovo and for those wishing to travel to Serbia while old Serbian plates will become defunct.
