The name of Bentinck came from the family name of the Earl of Portland

Pupils were first admitted into Bentinck on 19 September 1957, but the schools official opening wasn't until 1960. Some of the buildings such as the Hall were the same up until 2007 as they were then. Bentinck's first headmaster was Mr Wade and the deputy was Mr Taylor.
Pupils were taught Maths, English, Science, Geography, History, R.E., Music, Art and P.E. Boys took Metalwork, Woodwork, and Technical Drawing, whereas the girls learnt Cooking and Needlework.
The uniform for the girls consisted of a short, grey skirt (or a green and white striped dress in winter), a green and white striped shirt, a bottle-green v-neck, navy jumper and blazer. Boys wore grey trousers, a white shirt and a bottle-green blazer.
The name of the school changed to Outwood Academy Valley and is now an Academy belonging to the Outwood Family. The uniform has also changed.

Jewellery is mostly prohibited, excepting simple ear studs. Bags must be stringed or back packs and handbags are not allowed. Boots are not allowed. Mobile phones are allowed but must be turned off and make up was allowed at a minimal in September but in October was banned.

Current
In late 2007, the new building had been built in a different location and had opened. The new building has two floors consisting of English, Maths, P.E., Humanities (geography, history, R.E), Technology, MFL (Spanish, German, French) and Creative and performing arts (Drama, Music, I.C.T) departments and a partial third floor for Science. The public and staff entrance surround the offices and reception. Above is the learning centre/Library which takes up part of the second and third floor. The P.E. department has a large sports hall two changing rooms side by side and a smaller gym, it is also linked to the Leisure Centre. The Cafeteria is located by the cyclist entrance and by the delivery entrance. It has a large eating area and two main counters. Next to the cafeteria is the hall where the assemblies and other events are held. In the centre of the building is an outdoor courtyard and the inside part of the centre is an atrium.The name of the school changed to Outwood Academy Valley and is now an Academy belonging to the Outwood Family. Post 16
On 3 September 2008 the Post 16 Centre opened as the new 6th form that was in place before. The building is across the road from Valley School. The Post 16 is an alternative to college.See also
