Vainona High School accepted its first 150 pupils in January 1974.

The founder-head-master was Mr. William (Bill) A. Staude.
In 1997, the school had one of the best O'level pass rates in Zimbabwe.

Brita Maselethulini who became the first winner of the World Wide Miss Malaika Beauty Pageant also learnt at Vainona High School(1992–1997)Brita did the nation proud when she won this inaugural beauty pageant, thereby putting the country on its rightful place on the world map.Through her title ,she became amongst the few beautiful young lady Ambassadors of Zimbabwe,promoting the country as a safe and beautiful destination to local and international people through taking part in various international beauty pageants and other charitable events.

Audry Chiumbu-Maseko(now Murasiki), who also learnt at Vainona High School,became winner of Supermodel, the country's prestigious and premier modeling and fashion showcase,she went on to represent Zimbabwe in the Nokia Face of Africa 2001 Africa wide event,where a 4-year modelling contract with leading global modelling agency Ford, worth US$500 000 was on offer(the richest modelling contract on the continent).Ford was one of the first major modelling agencies ever, with representation across the Americas and Europe

Priscilla Chigariro,also of Vainona High School scooped the Miss Face title in the year 2000 Supermodel of Zimbabwe competition.

The late Lewis Muridzo Jnr who was a golf professional also attended Vainona High school. He won many international awards.
