Uttam Mohanty was born in place called Balrampur in Bihar. His forefathers belonged to Jajpur, instead, his grand father choose to settle down in Baripada 150 years ago. He completed his early education from Maharaja Purnachandra Highschool where he actively participated in drama and plays. As a child he was very naughty which brought fresh compliants from outside. After Matriculation he joined Maharaja Purnachandra college for Intermedite in science. These were the times when he inclined more towards acting. He always tried to play the lead part in Dramas. He was equally passionate to sports like Badminton and Table tennis. After Completing Graduation in Commerce he went to Ludhiana for Chartered Accountancy. Thereafter he stayed with his brother in Kolkata for sometime.
He dominated the Oriya film industry throughout the 80's and 90's. His native town is in Baripada, Mayurbhanj district now he is in Bhubaneswar. He is married to Oriya film deamgirl Aparajita Mohanty
and they have a son named Tanmay Mohanty (Babusan), who is a very good classical singer at the age of 10. Uttam Mohanty first explored the Oriya film world while he was living with his elder brother Late Arun Ku. Mohanty in Calcutta. He signed for the first Oriya movie while he had enrolled for chartered accountancy course in Calcutta. Later, his first film ABHIMAN (1977) directed by sadhu meher was a big hit and then Uttam opted seriously for being an actor. Afterwards, he slowly stabilised his position in the Oriya film industry keeping pace with the then Oriya greats Prasanta Nanda, Shriram Panda, Ajit Das etc. He has acted in lot of films with leading actress Mahasweta Ray (Rasmi Ray). Both have given a lot of super hit movies on eighties. By the time they were in love and decided to marry. But the love did not last long. The pair was separated due to some cause."Palatak" was the last film. Again the pair was hit in 1988 by Prasanta Nanda in the film of "Ja devi sarbavutesu". Later both came in lot of films in nineties.Still now viewers are hunger to anticipate the pair.Then there was a time which saw him to be the undisputed king of the Oriya film industry. Such was his position and fame as a super-hero in Oriya films that, he dominated the industry as long as 20 years as an active and singleton lead hero which was notable. Even during his peak arena, no other actor was considered for movies other than he was, quite a stunning revealing of his dominance as a lead actor. He has done lot of Bengali films and given super hits.

In the later period of his career he did subsequent roles in Television.Serials like 'je pakhi Ude jete Dura', 'sara akash', Panatakani and 'uttaradayi' are most popular. His role as Bikhu bhai inSara Akash is memorable. His Hindi serials include Palash and bengali serial bideshini Bohu. His contribution to music albums and Bhajaas are also significant.

Knowing that a film named Abhiman is being made in baripada, he returned home with a hope of trying his luck in films. There were many a contenders for the lead role but Director Sadhu Meher had a special Interest in his capability and looks. He was selected. Co-actress Rita Chand was debuting through that film also. On the day of shooting he tuned up to the set well dressed with best possible suits available. Sadhu told him to take the make up of a poor guy. He was sent again to come back with old n dirty clothes and without make-up.
