Introduced species
An introduced species — or neozoon, alien, exotic, non-indigenous, or non-native species, or simply an introduction, is a species living outside its indigenous or native distributional range, and has arrived in an ecosystem or plant community by human activity, either deliberate or accidental...

Plant uses

Urtica urens is an herb traditionally used to support the skin and soothe common itchiness. This herb has been studied with particular attention on its possible ability to support the skin when outside irritants are the cause.

Since it has a larger number of stings for the area of the aerial parts of the herb, medicinal actions which rely on the use of the stings may render this species more effective than the more common Urtica dioica.

Organism interactions

New Zealand: U. urens is also a food plant for the New Zealand Red Admiral butterfly (Bassaris gonerilla, syn. Vanessa gonerilla, syn. Papilio gonerilla), and the Australian/New Zealand Yellow Admiral butterfly (Bassaris itea) .
