History

The hospital was formed by merging North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary (former voluntary hospital), City General Hospital (former workhouse

 infirmary) and Hartshill Orthopaedic Hospital (former orthopaedic hospital).

Excavations on the main site have revealed that a large medieval hospital operated on exactly the same site from the thirteenth century until the 1580s.

Current operations

It operates on three nearby sites. Most departments are on the City General Site with some departments on the old Royal Infirmary site. A separate central outpatients department is in Hartshill between the two hospital sites.

Development

In 2003 the hospital was chosen for a £350-million Private Finance Initiative

 development, and work on major new facilities is now underway. Most of the wards and A & E dept from the N S R I as its known locally will be moved across to the new Hospital during this year and 2012, the site will then be developed for much needed housing in this area.
