The university was established in 1973, Halmstad University is a Swedish state university with over 14 500 students, including more than 300 exchange students and more than 300 international programme students. The study programs and courses cover over 50 Bachelor's and Master's programs and more than 500 single subject courses. This includes ten international master's programmes. The university conducts Doctoral programs in Information Technology and Innovation Science. The Vice-chancellor is Mikael Alexandersson.

Halmstad University's educational profile is made up of three interwoven areas of strength which can be summarised as the development and study of organisations, products and quality of life. This is based on the three main research areas of the university: Innovation Science, Information Technology and Health Science. To promote interaction, the areas of strength are permeated by three distinctive attributes: collaborative outreach, innovation and well-being.
