UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA PERLIS (UniMAP)

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is a government-funded Malaysian public university situated at the northern-most part of peninsular Malaysia, bordering with Thailand. Formerly known as Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia (KUKUM) (English: Northern Malaysia University College of Engineering), it was established in 2001 as one of the government’s initiatives to satisfy the country’s human resource requirement, especially with regard to producing a new breed of engineers who can respond very well to the technical requisites stipulated in Malaysia’s Industrial Master Plan.

From its humble beginnings of only two schools offering two undergraduate engineering degree programmes (namely Microelectronic Engineering and Computer Engineering), UniMAP now offers twenty three programmes leading to B. Eng and B. Business and six programmes leading to Diploma (Engineering), offered through eight engineering schools and one business school. In addition, it has twelve postgraduate programmes leading to MSc (Engineering) and PhD. All of its undergraduate programmes are accredited by the Malaysian Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), which subscribes to the globally accepted engineering education convention Washington Accord, and to the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).

To-date, there are approximately 6300 students and a workforce of more than 600 people comprising of academic and non-academic staff. Of the 6300 students, 430 are postgraduates. Overall, close to 250 are international students. There is also a score of international staff – 60 to be exact - hailing from 16 countries around the world. In terms of graduate employability, UniMAP is one of Malaysia’s highest, which is at 70% for 2010 graduates.

Electronic-based engineering is UniMAP’s focus, however, related fields of engineering and technology that support the advancement of electronic-based engineering – such as bioprocess engineering, manufacturing engineering, and environmental engineering - are also pursued.

As far as research goes, there are eight research clusters, established since 2005. The clusters are Sensor Technology and Applications Cluster, Autonomous Systems and Machine Vision Cluster, Electrical Energy and Industrial Electronic System Cluster, Intelligent Signal Processing Cluster, Embedding Computing Cluster, Sustainable Engineering Cluster, Human-Interface and Business Incubation Cluster and the Institute of Nano Electronic.

According to the most recent government’s official ranking system MyRA, UniMAP ranked no. 5 amongst all 20 Malaysian public universities. Between 2003 and 2010, it accumulated RM 33.5 million (or approximately 7.7 million Euro or 6.9 million GBP) worth of research grants including from abroad. UniMAP’s research products have won hundreds of gold, silver and bronze medals in more than 20 exhibitions and competitions held in Malaysia and overseas, including in Geneva, Brussels, Warsaw, London, Seoul, and Pittsburgh. In Webometric’s ‘Ranking of Repositories’, it is placed at no. 239 in the world, whereas in ‘EduRoute’, it is at no. 749 in the world, and no. 4 in Malaysia. Measured against SCORPUS, UniMAP is at no. 10 amongst Malaysian public universities.
