The United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) was set up by the Secretary General of the United Nations on April 23, 1959.
The Group's remit is to deal with the problems of domestic standardisation of geographical names, and to offer suggestions and recommendations for (mainly linguistic) standardisation.
UNGEGN sessions are convened in three sessions within a period of five years. since 1967, UNGEGN has held 24 sessions.
The UK representative for UNGEGN is David Munro.
