Controversy
After several years of positive academic development such as increasing international accreditation for several faculties, the recruitment of research oriented faculty, and an expansion of postgraduate degree-offerings, the planned research orientation announced by the new Provost Dr. Rory Hume has not received sufficient financial backing to be fully implemented. In an article in The Chronicle http://chronicle.com/article/Money-Proves-ElusivePr/65658/ titled "Money Proves Elusive and Progress Difficult at United Arab Emirates U.," some information on the re-orientation plans can be found, with some comments below the article by the Provost and Emirati faculty. he Provost notes, in particular, that the nation continues to support the university as evidenced by a new campus funded by the government of Abu Dhabi, half of which has been opened in the 2010-2011 academic year and the remaining half of which is to be opened some time in 2012. Funding concerns have been somewhat alleviated by the increase in the budgets of the federal universities for the 2011-2012 academic year. http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/dh540m-budget-boost-for-federal-services.In December, 2010, the government announced a three year spending freeze to all state universities, including UAE University.
