UniFi is an amalgamation of “Uni” which denotes togetherness and camaraderie, while “Fi” symbolises fibre optics. This is a new service provided by TM Berhad the leading Integrated Telecommunications provider in Malaysia.
Initiated and signed in September 2008, the RM11.3 billion national HSBB (High-Speed Broadband) project is a PPP agreement between TM and the government to develop next generation HSBB infrastructure and services. TM is putting up RM8.9 billion while the government is co-investing RM2.4 billion on an incurred claims basis based on project milestones reached by TM.
UniFi is a bundled triple play service offering High Speed Internet, HyppTV (IPTV) and Voice.
The launch of UniFi is expected to intensify competition within the broadband space, which has seen the entrance of wireless broadband players like P1. Competitor YTL launched its WiMax wireless broadband in November 2010.
Malaysian government is banking on the HSBB project, which is the flagship of the National Broadband Initiative (NBI), to help Malaysia catch up with advanced countries such as Japan, Korea and Singapore, which have offered high speed broadband at relatively low prices for the past several years.
The rollout of Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) High Speed Broadband (HSBB) service, UniFi, continues to be on track with service availability now expanded to an additional 48 areas nationwide, bringing the total of premises passed to more than 750,000 at the end of 2010. This means that TM is well on its way to meet the targeted 1.3 million premises passed by the end of 2012 at the end of the first phase of the HSBB project rollout.
Unifi recently announced (via an email to registered Unifi users') that its adding nine new premium channels starting June 1st 2011. The channels will be:

Criticism
There have been complaints on Twitter and the general uproar about the download cap on its UniFi packages.. Despite this, TMNet insists that the plan for Unifi to impose download cap in the future is meant to ensure fair quality of service to all of its customers.To address this concern, TM held a briefing and feedback session attended by TM top-level management people, targeted especially at social media influencers and on the agenda were updates related to TM’s UniFi and Streamyx service, including security issues and consumer interest topics such as Fair Usage Policy, data caps and service contention ratio. The feedback session was well accepted by at least one of the participants with who wrote of his experience in his blog..
Although Unifi offer up to 20MB speed, the speed is only guaranteed for connections within Malaysia. Connection outside Malaysia is usually at a slower speed. Browsing the US, Australia, Japan and other major cities may only achieve a speed of 300kbps download on average and 100kbps upload on average, comparable to DSL Broadband in said countries. Overall ping rate is 250ms and above to servers outside Malaysia, although the ping rate can fluctuate wildly to higher rates. Telekom Malaysia continues to delude this subject.
Customer service provided by TM remain poor as most of the time the technical support relays on script rather than true technical knowledge. TM does not provide technical support on Mac, Linux nor FreeBSD. Although technically, the system is OS-independent and will work so long as the connecting PC supports the DHCP standard or the user manually sets up the connection.
Additionally, the rollout of the service is very slow, with only a few towns outside the Klang Valley receiving the service so far. Even within the Klang Valley, there still exists areas without coverage.
