The Hunters and the Blakes are children with problems. Dan Hunter is traumatized after the death of his twin brother Don in a car accident; his sister Polly suffers from depression (possibly bipolar disorder) and Rusty and John Blake live alone with their mother after their father left home for another woman. They meet a stable boy Bruce who is hiding with a racehorse in an old rambling derelict house following the death of the horse’s jockey.
...that is a bit ‘older’ in its way, but not about the usual two families. It is about a kidnapped racehorse at a deserted estate
Blurb from First Edition
Only one boy could manage the 'killer' stallion. And when it seemed certain that he would be charged with the murder of a jockey, who was planning to dope the horse, Bruce took the stallion into hiding with him. There was grazing—by night—in plenty, but Bruce himself needed food. The help he so badly wanted came in the form of four local children, all with problems of their own. How each of them grapples with his difficulties, how Bruce's name is cleared and how a happy future is assured for the beautiful, temperamental horse, makes compelling reading.
Monica Edwards has broken new ground in this unusual book with its fascinating country setting, well-realised characters and all-pervading sense of drama.
