The Society
was founded in 1967, mainly under the impetus of Sir Charles Brett
, to counter threats to the survival of Northern Ireland
's historic architecture. Today, with a membership of 1200, it is considered one of the most active groups in Britain concerned with this field. The Society strongly advocated and fought for the introduction of Listed building legislation to Northern Ireland, a campaign which was ultimately successful in 1972. This system saw the introduction of grants for repairs and whole areas being designated for conservation.
The Society's input is frequently sought by both local and national authorities on planning matters and in the development of planning legislation.
