Amateur career

Wegner buildup in the former GDR and learned there boxes. Between 1961 and 1971 he boxed for different associations and fought 176 amateur fights.

During his active years Wegner could become several times district masters and celebrated his largest success in 1970, when he became with his associations new BSG bismuth Gera GDR crew master.
