History

The Udgir city has a glorious historical background and is known for the well built fort from pre-Bahamani age, and the nearly 800 years of Muslim rule under the Sultans and the Mughals over the region. It is also famous for the historic battle between Marathas, led by Sadashivrao Bhau who defeated Nizam in 1759 when the treaty of Udgir was signed. Marathas got a convincing victory in the battle of Udgir under the able leadership of brave warrior Sadashivrao Bhau. Later it prompted Peshwe (Peshwas) of Pune to promote/elevate & designate him as Chief Commander of the Maratha Army for the Third Battle of Panipat
Third battle of Panipat
The Third Battle of Panipat took place on 14 January 1761, at Panipat , about 60 miles north of Delhi between a northern expeditionary force of the Maratha Confederacy and a coalition of the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali with 2 Indian Muslim allies—the Rohilla Afghans of the Doab, and the...

 fought in 1761.

With respect to the many famous wars and battles of Panipat, over the centuries "Panipat" has itself become a meaningful term and proverb with many meanings. viz Watres (the Wothiness/Metals) "Tested/Examined", Merged etc. Further more related to debacles, setbacks wars, battles, clashes, conflicts, contexts etc. Paani = the water/s got pat = ( also means found in some sense) but more as lost, vanished, or evapourated.

Around Panchkroshi of Udgir city and the fort in particular, there are old observation points, buildings, and establishments [all well built& mostly Table Tops with special white clay (shadu=cement) and varieties of mixed stones] scattered over many kilometers, mostly on the hills in every directions. They were used by the military for protection and point of views, and are now used for a few resorts, rest houses, mahals (like small palaces); without exceptions those are disfigured and destroyed. This is something very serious to be looked into and taken care earnestly by the government authorities.

The fort of Udgir still stands in all its glory, speaking volumes about the Indian history and Indian culture. The fort is bounded by a 40ft deep trench, as the fort is built at the ground level. In the fort are several palaces Durbar halls and the Samadhi of Udaygir Maharaj which is 60 feet under ground level. Udgir was named after the famous Hindu Saint Udaygiri Rishi. This is a place of great reverence to the people of the region. The fort has some rare inscriptions written in Arabic and Persian which testify to the promotion of knowledge and culture by the Muslim rulers over the centuries. There is a famous Jamia Masjid located at Chaubara which is one of the two biggest mosques, the other one is Maqbara mosque which is located in the centre of the city.

It is believed that the Udgir fort has a direct deep underground soorang (tunnel) connection with bhalki and the Bider Forts.
