Uday Sahay, Uday Sahay, a voluntarily retired IPS officer of 1988 batch of AGMU Cadre, has the unique distinction of serving in media organizations for nearly a decade and setting up communication management and soft skills training companies now, after he spent ten years in active policing as his initial career. Having held his last assignment as Additional Director General (Communications) in the Organising Committee of Commonwealth Games, Delhi till October 2010, he earlier led the Directorate of Information and Publicity of Delhi Government as Director since 2006 and, prior to that, held charge of the Deputy Director General in Prasar Bharati

Currently, he is the Chairman and the Managing Director of SAUV Communications Private Limited as well as MD and CEO of another company, Bodhi Tree Life Learning Private Limited, both Delhi based. His edited book published by the Oxford University Press, titled Making News: Handbook of the Media in Contemporary India, shot him into prominence in 2006 when it was declared as super brand as sixth bestseller in the non-fiction category Besides, he has doubled up as photographer and photo-editor in a Coffee Table book titled Delhi: India in One City (2009), published by Academic Foundation, which is text edited by Malavika Singh (the Editor of Seminar) His latest book Media aur Jansamvad, co-authored with Vartika Nanda, a noted journalist, was published by Samayik Prakashan in 2009.

Contributing profusely to the media journals and delivering a series of talk in the coveted media lecture circuit in Delhi – in all media journals and media institutes of national repute - has become his passion today. He has been invited to deliver talk on media in prestigious institutions such as ""LBS Academy of Administration (Mussourie), European Commission, Delhi School of Economics, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi School of Communications, IP College, Khalsa College, Indian Institute of Learning and Advanced Development (INLEAD) and Indian Institute of Mass Communication"". He organized a number of seminars and workshops on media issues in Delhi, Patna, Jaipur, and Nainitaal. He is pursuing his PhD research on Media and Advertising in the Centre for School of Social System at JNU.

The most significant development in Sahay’s career of late however has been that he is perceived as a professional who has brought about a kind of turn around in the communication scale, style, and content of Delhi Government. Many see him today as the architect who raised Sheila Dikshit’s brand that facilitated her third term leadership victory in Delhi’s Assembly. Much talked about of his experiments in brand and functional campaigns are advertorials in print media, radio jingles and TV spots in audio-visual media and outdoor publicity in bus-queue-shelters and metro trains.

Sahay’s ten years of passionate involvement in media research, media training and media education has earned him the reputation of an ace communication analyst.

 - he joined PhD programme in Sociology later at JNU while being in bureaucracy - Sahay joined the Central Trade Service and was posted at Calcutta and Jaipur as Assistant Chief Controller of Imports & Exports. After his two years stint as ACP Preet Vihar and Patel Nagar Sub-Divisions of Delhi, he was posted as Superintendent of Police in one of the remotest districts for 3 years in Mizoram

. Sahay returned to Delhi and got posted as Additional DCP in North West District and subsequently as Deputy Commissioner of Police, PCR. He held the district charge of West District since 1998 end and took charge of Central District, Delhi in July 2000 where he remained till August 2001. It was in 2001 that he joined Prasar Bharati.

His other passions: Uday Sahay has a keen interest in painting, poetry, writing and literature and he has to his credit several write-ups and short stories on social issues, especially Child’s Rights, in leading journals and magazines. His poetry collection is under compilation. A cartoon contest on media organized by him in July 2003 at India Habitat Centre in Delhi drew heavy media attention.

Sahay has extensively trekked in Garhwal and Kumaon hills of Himalayas. He has also trekked to Kailash–Manasarovar as Liaison Officer of Government of India heading a group of pilgrims in the year 1997. It was held again in 1999 in collaboration with Himalayan Heritage Center at Dehradun and further in January 2001 in the “Kumbh Mela” at Allahabad, under the auspices of India Heritage Research Foundation and inaugurated by His Holiness, Dalai Lama. In 2003, it was repeated in Delhi at IGNCA and then in Hong Kong’s Visual Art Gallery. He made a film in 2003 titled ‘Himalayan Mystique: Kailash.

Awards

In January 2001, Delhi Commission for Women honoured Uday Sahay for his commendable work done in partnership with the Commission. Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Delhi, presented the Award. On April 2001, he was given Award for Excellence in Public Service by a reputed NGO, ‘Awantika’. The award was given in the Indian International Centre by the then Minister of Human Resources Development. In 2006, he was conferred Radha Raman Award for excellence in media research. The Chief Minister of Delhi gave the award in FICCI Auditorium. In 2009, Public Relations Council of India, in its annual award ceremony at Bangalore, gave him award for PR Excellence in India. In July 2009, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting nominated him as Member of the Inter-Media Publicity Co-ordination Committee (IMPCC). In 2010, the Indian Institute of Learning & Advanced Development (INLEAD) nominated him as a Regent of the INLEAD Federation. In 2010, he was nominated to the Board of Studies of University School of Mass Communication (USMC), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University
