History

UC Riverside Student Recreation Center was opened in January of 1994, constructed entirely from student fees. Its purpose is to build students' physical fitness and recreation, as well to host UC Riverside Highlanders athletic teams. The 80000 square feet (7,432.2 m²) structure seats up to 3,168 people. In the Summer of 2003, a new public address system and sound enhancing tiles were installed to improve fans' viewing and listening experience. An expansion plan for the Student Recreation Center includes tripling the size of the current fitness center, doubling the amount of multipurpose rooms, and adding a swimming pool complex to the facility.

Amenities

In addition to full locker rooms, 6000 square feet (557.4 m²) weight training facility, and 3000 square feet (278.7 m²) area dedicated to cardio-fitness machines, the Student Recreation Center has many different sporting courts for students to use. UC Riverside Highlanders athletics

The athletics department for UC Riverside, the UC Riverside Highlanders call the Student Recreation Center home. Programs that use it include the UC Riverside Highlanders men's basketball and UC Riverside Highlanders women's basketball teams, as well as the UC Riverside Highlanders women's volleyball team. Previously, the teams played in the UCR Gym which was built in 1955 and has 900 seats.

Other uses

Student Recreation Center's main function is for the well-being of the UC Riverside student population through physical fitness and intramural sports. It has also hosted events including student commencement ceremonies, conferences, and musical bands and acts.
