The UC Davis School of Education, is one of 10 schools and colleges at the University of California, Davis. The school offers Ph.D., Ed.D, and M.A., degrees in education, as well as single and multiple subject teaching credentials. The current and founding dean of the school is Harold Levine.
The School forges partnerships and collaborations while offering interdisciplinary programs that position graduates to provide leadership and insight into the greatest challenges facing educators around the world.
Focus areas at the School of Education are aligned with the needs of the State: English learners; math, science and technology; neurodevelopment and education; literacy; and policy. Efforts in faculty hiring, program development and partnership building focus on those needs. The school is expanding its work with practicing educators through professional development programs and graduate degree programs designed especially for veteran educators. As part of a land-grant university, the School has a role in training teachers and education leaders, providing policy analysis and recommendations, conducting research to improve instruction, and increasing the public’s awareness and knowledge of education issues.
The PhD in Education is a multidisciplinary program offered by the Graduate Group in Education. The Designated Emphasis (DE) in Writing, Rhetoric, and Composition Studies (WRaCS) offers PhD students in affiliated programs the opportunity to prepare for leadership roles in writing research, teaching, and program administration. PhD emphasis areas include:
The Capital Area North Doctorate in Educational Leadership, or CANDEL, is a joint doctoral program between the University of California at Davis and Sonoma State University. The EdD program is designed to produce exemplary leaders in schools, community colleges and related areas within education. Formulated in 2005, CANDEL is fully accredited by WASC and aims to cultivate educational leaders from public schools, community colleges, state and local educational agencies, and organizations serving education in California. Program participants include principals, district office and county office of education staff, teachers, consultants, community college presidents and vice-chancellors and other current or aspiring leaders.
The MA Program in Education offers three tracks: a general track that serves a broad range of student research interests and career plans, a Practicing Teachers track that offers research training and experience focused on classroom-based inquiry and instructional intervention, and an MA/Credential track that integrates the MA with the Teaching Credential and focuses particularly on classroom-based research.
The Teaching Credential Program, in conjunction with the MA Program's MA/Credential track, offers qualified students the option to obtain both a Master of Arts in Education degree and a Multiple Subject or Single Subject Credential (optional BCLAD emphasis) in a combined five-quarter program.

About
Education on the Davis campus dates back to 1918, shortly after opening, with a training program to prepare teachers to provide instruction in raising crops and animals commercially. The School of Education, formed in 2002 as a reconstitution of a long-standing division within the College of Letters and Sciences, is built on a legacy that began with the first teacher-training program on the Davis campus 85 years ago.Focus areas at the School of Education are aligned with the needs of the State: English learners; math, science and technology; neurodevelopment and education; literacy; and policy.
