. Founded in 1955 by Prof. Patrick Doherty and Rev. O'Doherty it is one of the oldest clubs in the country and at a current membership of 157, it is also the largest. Despite the former weakness of fencing in Ireland the UCDFC has become a leading member of the Irish Fencing Federation, contributing significantly to the establishment of the sport in the country; where the current highest ranked male foilest in the country is a former member, and the highest ranked sabreur is a former captain and an honourary life member. The current highest ranked student male foilest and student male epeeist are both current members. The club competes with distinction across the country and has achieved the Intervarsity Trophy a total of twenty times.

In the academic year of 2010/2011, among other achievements, the club achieved medals in each discipline in which they competed in the West of Ireland Open Championship. The club itself hosts a number of annual competitions, the most significant of which is the East of Ireland Open, which is the second largest international competition held in the country after the Irish Open.
