History

Tyrrelstown (often incorrectly spelt as Tyrellstown or Tyrrellstown) derives its name from that of the Tyrrell family, who were granted the lands in the parishes of Clonsilla and Mulhuddart in 1178 by the Norman, Hugh DeLacy. Historically Tyrrelstown is part of the Barony of Castleknock, which had its focal point at Castleknock Castle

Local amenities

A new retail area known as Tyrrelstown Town Centre opened on November 24th, 2005 and has been created as part of the recent housing developments to cater to the local inhabitants. A 4-star luxury http://www.carltonhotelblanchardstown.com hotel was opened in 2006. Plans for a large retail park have been postponed. Tyrrelstown was the location of Ireland's first proposed indoor ski slope, Snowtopia which the main developer Twinlite had intended to develop on the site in the coming years. The proposed snowdome was refused planning permission and is currently on appeal.

There is also a local football (soccer) team called Tyrrelstown FC, which currently has 2 senior teams playing in the AUL as well as a schoolboy teams playing in the DDSL. As of March 2009, Urbus have introduced a 7 day service between Tyrrelstown and the Blanchardstown area with regular clockface timetables meaning the Blanchardstown centre is accessible by public transport at the weekend for the first time. This service also serves Dublin Airport

A new N2 - N3 link road has been approved funding and construction is due to commence in September 2011. By road it is accessible via Mulhuddart, Hollystown and Cruiserath.

Developers

Tyrrelstown was created by Dublin property company Twinlite and launched in 2001. Other development companies involved include McInerney Construction, Kranok Construction and Merville Homes. Originally the site was zoned for a landfill that was scrapped; the town now hosts over 5,500 inhabitants and is set to expand further.
