  • Will Burrows – age 14, son of a Colonist who was adopted by Dr. Burrows; Will is the protagonist of the series.
  • Chester Rawls – age 14, a 'Topsoiler' who is Will's best friend and goes with him underground and into The Colony.
  • Rebecca Twins – age 12, Styx twins, the Rebeccas are the granddaughters of the old Styx and were adopted by Dr. Burrows and his wife; they are the antagonists and are out to kill Will.
  • Dr. Burrows - Adoptive father of Will and the Rebeccas, his disappearance leads Will and Chester to venture underground in search for him.
