Trinidad was founded in 1805 by General José Gervasio Artigas

History
Named for the Spanish word for 'Trinity', its naming reflects a less secular period in the country's history. The city was initially called: 'Santísima Trinidad de los Porongos' — (Most Holy Trinity of the Porongos). The stream Arroyo Sarandí, flows 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) west of the city, while the stream Arroyo Porongo flows 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) east of the city, both tributaries of the river Río Yí.The city occupies an area of 5.144 sqkm on an altitude of 134 metres (439.6 ft) above sea level.
