He was decorated as a Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1989. Although his struggle with cocaine lasted three years and cost his family thousands of dollars in medical bills due to his increased frequency of epileptic episodes, he ultimately died in 2009 of a heart attack.
