, the CDP had a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.5 km²), of which, 3.6 square miles (9.3 km²) of it was land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (2.17%) was water.

The Upper Falls of Coal Post Office

the area, was established in 1851. During Reconstruction, federal
officials closed it in 1880. When residents forced its reopening through political pressure in 1881, federal authorities retaliated against this "whirlwind of protest" by renaming the post office "Tornado
". They closed it again in 1882 and were forced to open it again in 1886.
