had begun announcing for the Blue Jays in 1977, with Early Wynn
providing color commentary until the end of 1980. Cheek's next long-term partner, Jerry Howarth
, joined him partway thru the next season. For 25 years they worked as a pair — except for a period as a threesome with Gary Matthews
in 2000 and 2001 — until Cheek's brain cancer, diagnosed in 2004, forced him to retire in 2005, with Howarth taking over play-by-play and Warren Sawkiw
