 club in Cork and enjoyed much success. He was only out of the minor ranks when he became a star on the club's senior team. Mulcahy was the number one goalkeeper as St. Finbarr's captured back-to-back county titles

 in 1942 and 1943. Three years later in 1946 he won a third county championship title before collecting a fourth in 1947. Mulcahy won a fifth and final county winners' medal in 1955.

Inter-county

Mulcahy first came to prominence in 1941 as a member of the Cork minor hurling team. That year he won a Munster minor title, as well as an All-Ireland

. Cork lost their provincial crown in 1945, however, the team returned in 1946 with Mulcahy winning a third Munster medal. This was subsequently converted into a third All-Ireland medal following a huge victory over Kilkenny
