Because he was short and stocky as a child, Fouts' nickname soon became Stubby. He married Eva Lou, and would be married to her for over 63 years until his death in 2004. Fouts had two sons and a daughter. The oldest son, Thomas L. Fouts preceded him in death, as did a grandson. His daughter Connie lives in Illinois, while his son Dan lives in Cass County, Indiana
