Byrum was born in Onida, South Dakota
. He attended the University of New Mexico
and New Mexico State University
before turning professional in 1984. He has played over five hundred events on the PGA Tour
, his sole victory coming at the 1989 Kemper Open. He owns two top-10 finishes in major championships: T8 in the 2002 U.S. Open
at Bethpage and a 9th in the 1997 PGA Championship
at Winged Foot. His older brother Curt
also competed on the PGA Tour and is now an analyst on the Golf Channel.
Away from golf, Byrum was noted for his eccentric behaviour, and was one of the most popular players on the tour. Examples of this eccentricty included entering a gala dinner at the 1994 Houston Open dressed as a chicken and proceeding to eat his 4 course meal, remaining in said outfit for the entirety of the meal. On discovering that he had once forgotten to select a putter as one of his 14 clubs, Byrum played an entire round using his 3 wood as a makeshift putter, using the shaft of the club rather like a pool cue to putt.
