It is broadcast pre-Today from 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays. On the weekends, the program is branded as Weekend Today in New York and is broadcast from 6 a.m to 7 a.m. and later from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays; and from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Sundays — the gaps are for Today.

The local news "cut ins" during Today are also branded as Today in New York.

Today in New York was launched in 1988. For the first decade or so the broadcast was anchored from the newsroom. The theme music was different than the station's other newscasts such as Live at Five

Until the 1990s, the weekday broadcast was one-hour long airing from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. It was then expanded to sixty-five minutes, starting at 5:55 a.m. It was subsequently expanded to ninety minutes (starting at 5:30 a.m.) and then to its current two and a half hours.
