However, Dr. Eugene Ledbetter, the doctor that delivered Gene Autry, has stated that he was not born in Tioga, though there was disagreement between himself and the Autrys because of unpaid doctor bills. Gene Autry did spend some time growing up in Tioga, but not more than a few years.

, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), of which, 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) of it is land and 0.81% is water.
It is the official birthplace of Gene Autry; one of the main streets through the town is named in his memory. However, Dr. Eugene Ledbetter, the doctor that delivered Gene Autry, has stated that he was not born in Tioga, though there was disagreement between himself and the Autrys because of unpaid doctor bills. Gene Autry did spend some time growing up in Tioga, but not more than a few years.
Dr Ledbetter was correct in stating Autry was not born in Tioga. He was born on the family homestead about ten miles west of the actual city of Tioga. Lake Ray Roberts, which surrounds Tioga, was completed in the late 80's and the house Autry was born in is now under several hundred feet of water.
