It was Donnelly's idea, in 1973, that his Emergency! character of Chet should grow a moustache, and therefore, Donnelly grew a very bushy moustache so that his character could stand out from the others; this soon became his character's trademark. Soon after, Donnelly's Emergency! co-star Marco Lopez
grew one as well.
Donnelly also directed several episodes of Emergency! during its seven-year run.
