Cappello was born in Silver Lake, Westchester County, New York
to Italian parents. The instruments in his repertoire include tenor saxophone, keyboards, percussion, guitar, and harmonica. Cappello is also a vocalist and composer. His professional career began alongside Billy Crystal
. For five years, Cappello provided musical improvisations on piano and saxophone to accompany Crystal's comedy.

. From 1984 to 1999 Cappello was a member of Tina Turner's band.

Cappello also performed with the 1999 version of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, of which he was a member in 1992. Currently, he is working on various musical projects.
