 to publican Frederick Palmer Thrower and Mary Ann Comerford, he became a cabinet maker. Around 1900 he married Catherine Newman, with whom he had five children. He was President of the Furniture Trades Union, secretary of the Trades and Labour Council and secretary of the Eight Hour Day Committee in 1900; later, from 1907 to 1910, he would be secretary of the Western Timbergetters Association. In 1904 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly
