Career

Slaney trained as a teacher at Saltley Collage until 1874 and was appointed Stoke's Secretary-Manager in the summer of 1874 holding the position until his resignation in 1883. He continued to play during his time in office and was club captain for seven years from 1875. Described as a "fine and dashing" player, he stopped playing to become a referee in 1885.

Slanley also helped form the Staffordshire Football Association
