 in 1794 after the death of Elizabeth Pakenham, 1st Countess of Longford and was appointed a Knight of the Order of St Patrick on 17 December 1813.
He was one of the 28 peers of Ireland elected to the 1st Union Parliament on 2 August 1800. He was a member of the House of Lords until his death. The 2nd Earl of Longford's sister, Catherine Pakenham, was married to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington
