He also served in World War I and World War II and attained the rank of commander in the U.S. Navy.
McCann coached prep sports in Cincinnati and later became the head football coach at the University Of Miami, where his team played in the first three Orange Bowl games.

McCann served as Director Of Athletics at the Great Lakes Training Center before taking over as staff director of athletics for the Fifth Army with headquarters in Chicago.

Upon his retirement from the Navy after 20 years of service, Vice Admiral W.R. Smedberg, chief of naval operations, told Commander McCann, "I desire to express the appreciation of the Navy Department for your faithful and honorable service. During your long naval career you have contributed greatly to the effiency and morale of the Navy."
