The third Republic of Hungary is an informal term used for the current republic of Hungary
, which was proclaimed on October 23, 1989 (the 33rd anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956), ending Hungary's communist era and replacing the former People's Republic of Hungary

The first republic was proclaimed on November 16, 1918 when the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed and Emperor Karl I abdicated. This republic ended a few months later with a communist takeover in the spring of 1919.
The second republic, as a sole decision by the parliament, was estabilished shortly after World War II
when the monarchy was officially abolished on February 1, 1946. Because of the soviet occupation, Hungary was quickly turned into a single-party socialist puppet state of the Soviet Union
by 1947, the People's Republic was proclaimed officially in 1949.
