The Word Among Us is designed to help people to pray and read Scripture. The format of the magazine is simple. Its appeal is to its predominantly Roman Catholic audience.

Each issue of The Word Among Us contains a daily meditation of around 400 words based on the Mass readings from the Liturgical year. There is also a monthly theme for each issue with three primary articles explaining an aspect of the Catholic faith such as prayer, the Sacraments, Lent, Advent, or the Scripture. In the back section, there are stories about the lives of the saints or personal witnesses. The Word Among produces three special issues per year for parishes - Advent, Lent, and Pentecost

The Word Among Us also has a Book Press division, which publishes Catholic literature.

Since 1989 the Word Among Us has supported prisoners, the military, and pregnancy centers with free literature, books, and magazines.
