The Underground is a club
/music venue
based in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent
. It is also part of the NME
group, Club NME. It is well known for holding host to several up & coming indie/rock/metal acts. It also serves as a great host to many local bands in the Staffordshire
area. Its popular Monday nights are renowned for their cheap drink promotions.
However when the club first opened (& before it became part of NME
) it was a rave music venue. Most of the events were held by Alex (MC Energy) & Stacey & although they used different names for them depending on what kind of music was being played on a particular night, they were still under the Illusion umbrella. It was also the venue where the two Entropy reunion nights were held in 2004 which Daz Willott played at & helped to promote.
. Probably the most well-remembered gig at the Underground would be the first of many times Pete Doherty
's band, Babyshambles
performed. The gig ended in an impromptu car top sing-along led by Pete and former Libertines band mate Carl Barat, the incident referred to as The Babyshambles riot was covered heavily in the music press, and gave the club immediate cult status.
. The Underground hosted a sold out Acoustic Set, by Pete Doherty
on the 11/2/2009, then again on the 30/05/2009. It is said that he enjoys playing the venue due to the immense atmosphere.
