 for young teens.

Setting

The story follows a teenage girl named Tally Youngblood who lives three hundred years from now in a futuristic city. Previously to the book, our world (known as the "Rusty World" because at the time we have used so much metal that over time had deteriorated and rusted) had collapsed because of the creation of an "oil bug" that caused oil to combust when it came into contact with oxygen. The people who survived the collapse decided that action had to be taken to prevent this happening in the future. The survivors then spread out into cities, where they gradually became self sufficient and eco-friendly, and integrated the operations into the world. One of the main points of the operation is to extend the halo effect

to all citizens, which was an idea that beautiful people had better fortune. This "halo effect" helped in reducing disputes and violence. They were not satisfied enough with the results, so they decided to develop a brain lesion (purposely damaged brain tissue) that made people compliant and pleasant. Some people became aware of the operation, and the lesions, and decided that they couldn't live in a place where something of that magnitude was happening. Villages like "The Smoke" were established to give citizens a place to go to avoid the lesions, and to be separated from society. The Smoke was also a place where two outlaw doctors named Maddy and Az studied how people who didn't have the brain damage behaved to determine its effects and possibly discover a cure.

Littlies

A child is a littlie until he/she turns twelve. Littlies are too young, cute, and innocent to be considered ugly. They live with their parents in the suburbs and attend elementary school.

Uglies

When a child turns twelve they are considered "Ugly". They live in highly monitored dorms in Uglyville and attend middle and high school. Uglies are encouraged to call each other nicknames based on their imperfections ex: fatty, skinny, squint. In some cities Uglies were also encouraged to pull tricks that get around minor rules to see who would cause the most trouble later in life.

New Pretties

When a person turns 16 they are given a huge operation that makes them perfect looking and beautiful. Right after receiving the operation, they become New Pretties: obsessed with "staying bubbly", new pretties look for thrills. Drinking champagne and hot air balloons are a few activities new pretties participate in. New pretties live in mansions in New Pretty Town, and are usually part of a clique, such as the "Crims", a group of pretties with a criminal past (back when they were uglies), The Swarm who only go places in large groups, and "Hot Airs", who float around in hot air balloons, and watch the nightly fireworks over New Pretty Town. Pretties who caused the most trouble as Uglies are more closely monitored and those who cause the most trouble as Pretties (those who resist the brain damage most) are marked for jobs that require fast action and independent thinking later in life.

Middle Pretties

Middle Pretties have picked their professions and gone through a second, minor operation that makes them look older and wiser. They then move to the suburbs and are allowed to marry and have children, but are only encouraged to do so every 10 years, as to not form a sibling bond, and so that the population of the city doesn't rise over capacity. Middle pretties are the working class, and have many of the same jobs as we do.

Late Pretties

Late Pretties, or "Crumblies" (Littlies, uglies, and new pretties may refer to their parents as crumblies, even if they are still middle pretties), are parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. They live in assisted living homes and receive life extension surgery that allows them to live into their middle hundreds and two-hundreds.

The Operation

The point of these operations is to stop wars and disagreements among people just because they look different from one another (by extending the halo effect

to everyone). It is later discovered that the operation gives people brain damage (e.g., brain lesion

s presumably similar in effect to a lobotomy

), eliminating disputes, anger, unhappiness, creativity, despair, or a desire to be different. The brain damage is reversible, as people in high pressure situations in the prettytime (Doctors, Special Circumstances operatives, Park Rangers, Fire Fighters, etc.) had the lesions removed when they became middle pretties. Maddy, one of the doctors who discovered the lesions, created 2 pills that could "fix" the lesions.

The First Try

The first cure Maddy developed consisted of two pills. In the first pill, the nanos (tiny robot machinery widely used throughout the prettytime) were to break down the lesions. The nanos in the second pill were to stop the nanos in the first pill from spreading. Both pills were to be taken together. Since Zane only took the first pill, his brain was permanently damaged, which ultimately led to his death.

The Second Try

The second cure consisted of only one pill needed for the treatment of the lesions. Maddy made the pills much safer; instead of removing a part of the brain, it stimulated the brain to work around the lesions. The Smokies, in partnership with the city Diego, mass distributed the pills across the world, causing the "Mind Rain", which marked the end of the prettytime.

The Special Cure

After she created the pills curing pretty lesions, Maddy created a cure for Specials. Unlike the pills, the Special Cure had to be injected with a needle. This cure didn't remove the "scary" appearance (sharp teeth and fingernails), but it removed the lesions in the brain, like the pills. After the mind rain, Tally is the only Special in existence from her city without the Special Cure. All other Specials were either despecialized or have an unknown status.

Series

The series, originally designed to be a trilogy, has four books, with the fourth released in 2007. If the first three covers are lined up spine-to-spine, a mouth, an ear, and an eye are visible on each book, a possible reference to the three wise monkeys

. The fourth book, Extras, takes place a few years after the mind-rain brought about by Tally Youngblood, the main character of the proper trilogy (Uglies/Pretties/Specials), which ended the Prettytime. Aya Fuse's (main character of the fourth book) city now runs on a "fame economy," which was invented when it was discovered that non-bubbleheads consume way too many resources to keep the Prettytime economy afloat.

Tally Youngblood

Tally is the protagonist of the books, first appearing in Uglies
Uglies
Uglies is a 2005 science fiction novel by Scott Westerfeld. It is set in a future post-scarcity dystopian world in which everyone is turned "Pretty" by extreme cosmetic surgery upon reaching age 16. It tells the story of teenager Tally Youngblood who rebels against society's enforced conformity,...

as a young, 15-year-old girl, waiting for her 16th birthday so that she can be turned pretty. Throughout the series, Tally undergoes significant changes physically and mentally from Ugly, to Pretty, to Special, different classes of citizen in her city.

Changes

Tally undergoes many changes throughout the series in both appearance and personality. Each changes according to her status as an Ugly, Pretty, or Special. Loving David then falling for Zane, then sharing her love for both.
Ugly

Tally has frizzy hair thats curly, squinty eyes, patchy complexion with a wide forehead, a squashed-in nose and thin lips. She notes to her best friend, Shay, that she likes the left side of her face more than the right. These imperfections are common to all uglies, but due to the cultural differences in the book, these imperfections are exaggerated. As an ugly, Tally is rebellious and carefree, yet anxious and excited for the inevitable operation.
Pretty

As a pretty, Tally takes on the appearance of other pretties her age: perfect teeth, jawbone, complexion, large hypnotic eyes, slim frame and full lips. Her frizzy hair becomes sleek, curly and shiny and her eye color is changed to silver. As a pretty, Tally is vapid and shallow, side effects of brain alterations, also called lesions, secretly performed during the pretty surgery. However, when she experiences a strong emotion she becomes "bubbly", her mind sharpens and her attitude swings around, resembling that of her ugly attitude in its rebellion and sharp wit.
Special

As a Special, Tally is a part of a new "special Special" group called Cutters. Tally's Cutter operation gives her cruel beauty, strong reflexes, enhanced senses, and a series of flash tattoos all over her face and arms. She has cool, black eyes, sharpened teeth, stronger nails, and her face has wolf-like features. Her brain has lesions again; she experiences moments of pure euphoria and rage, and thinks of herself as superior to everyone else and despises anyone who isn't special. As a Cutter, she carries a knife used to inflict wounds upon herself, clearing her mind and sharpening her senses, making her "icy". Later, Tally learns to become "icy" on her own, without wounding herself.

Specials

In the conclusion to the Uglies trilogy, Specials
Specials (novel)
Specials is the third novel in the Uglies series of novels, written by the American author Scott Westerfeld. It continues the story of the protagonist, Tally Youngblood.-Plot introduction:...

, Tally has become a Special Circumstances agent against her will. But, now that she sees the clarity and awareness that comes with being a Special she is beginning to enjoy herself. There's a catch to being Special. She is trying to destroy the very people that brought her to where she is. A New Smoke has been created and there are Uglies and Pretties both in the fight against the government. The Specials are there to stop them. Tally is a Cutter along with Shay, Tachs, Fausto, Ho and the others. There is an attack in the night by the New Smoke pulling out all the stops. Sneak suits, infrared, and high-speed bows and arrows. Fausto is captured and that is when Tally Youngblood's world is turned right side up for the first time in her life. She convinces Zane to try to go to the New Smoke and she tries to follow him she ends up in a city called Diego that turns out to be the New Smoke. Tally is amazed that the New Smoke had a whole city on their side. That explains the sneak suits. Special Circumstances soon finds out about Diego helping out the rebellious new Smoke, so they start a war against Diego. They bombed Town Hall and quickly destroyed most of the city, despite these actions being extremely "rusty". Tally finds Shay and the other Cutters and realizes that they have been cured by Maddy of the "special" lesions. Tally feels betrayed and whilst roaming the evacuated Diego hospital gets a ping from Shay. Shay has found Zane lying in critical condition in the hospital. Despite the doctors efforts, Zane's brain damage is too much and Zane dies. Tally is distraught and decides to go back to her city to confess to Dr. Cable, hoping that this will end the war. Tally does this and sneakily cures Dr. Cable, who comes to her rescue when Tally is about to be De-specialized. Tally escapes and finds David, at the end of the book Tally sends a ping to Shay, Peris, and Maddy regarding her future with David. This becomes known as the Manifesto in Extras

Extras is a young adult science fiction novel written by Scott Westerfeld. The novel was published and released by Simon & Schuster on October 2, 2007, and is a companion book to the Uglies series. However, Extras differs from its predecessors in that its protagonist is fifteen-year-old Aya Fuse,...

.

You all say you need us. Well, maybe you do, but not to help you. You have enough help, with the bubbly new minds about to be unleashed, with all the cities coming awake at last. Together you're more than enough to change the world without us. So, from now on, David and I are here to stand in your way. You see, freedom has a way of destroying things. Be careful with the world, or the next time we meet, it might get ugly.

~Tally Youngblood

Extras

Tally Youngblood finds Aya Fuse, who discovers a launcher hidden in a mountain that launches metal in to space. They then go to Singapore to stop the people that they think are doing it.

Shay

Shay is Tally's best friend throughout the series. They meet when Tally is returning from her visit to Peris in New Pretty Town. Shay confides in Tally about The Smoke. Tally follows Shay in operations. Shay becomes a pretty, and Tally follows, and once again when Shay becomes a Cutter for Dr. Cable. Shay and Tally are often in disagreement about David and Zane. Even though Shay can sometimes seem deeply flawed, she is one of Tally's true friends.

David

David is Tally and Shay's contact from "The Smoke". Shay met David when her friends were running away from the city, because David had explained the operation to them. David is the son of Maddy and Az, and he was born and raised in the wild, after his parents left Tally's city. He is also in love with Tally, due to her seriousness while she was in the Smoke. But before she arrives, he was dating Shay, and is the cause for Tally and Shay's first dispute in the first book. In the end of Specials, he accompanies Tally in creating the new "Special Circumstances" that is set on keeping the Wild safe, and making sure people weren't pushing too far.

Maddy and Az

Maddy and Az are David's parents. She and Az are from Tally's city, but they ran away. Maddy was on The Committee for Morphological Standards (A.K.A The Pretty Committee) and had begun doing some research on how to make the operation safer for everyone. She noticed lesions in the brains of all New Pretties

were never mentioned. She began doing more research, but Special Circumstances showed up and forced her to discontinue her research, or lose her medical license. Her and Az became suspicious, and they fled the city, and established "The Smoke".

Croy

Croy is one of Shay's friends who moved out to The Smoke. He is suspicious of Tally most of the time, but after she fights with the specials, he trusts her.

Peris

Peris is Tally's childhood friend. Peris was older than Tally, therefore he got the operation before Tally. Peris is a member of The Crims, and has been a pretty through all of the books.

Dr. Cable

Dr. Cable is the head of Special Circumstances. She forces Tally into betraying her friends from The Smoke, and forces her to turn pretty. After seeing Tally fight the lesions in her brain as a pretty, she invites Tally to join her as a special. Tally declines, but at the end of the book, Tally is turned against her will into a Special Circumstances agent.

Zane

Zane is the leader of the Crim clique, and almost became a Smokey, but at the last minute he backed out and he became a pretty. He becomes close friends with Tally, and they eventually start a relationship. When they received Maddy's cure, Tally and Zane each took one pill. This had dire effects on Zane's health. As a Cutter, Tally struggled with past memories of Zane and his "weaknesses" and tremors caused by the brain damage, affecting Zane's relationship with her.

Fausto

Fausto is another Crim who made it to The Smoke. He later becomes a special, and is kidnapped by the New Smokies, who experiment on him for a cure for Specials.

Andrew Simpson Smith

A villager from a reserve used by anthropologists to study human nature. He helps Tally escape the reservation, then he escapes himself, and aids the New Smokies.

Aya Fuse

. While the world suffers from a metal shortage, she discovers a secret stash of metal, which she believed was to be used for weapons. It was actually for a space station that had no impact on the earth.

Moggle

Moggle is Aya's hovercam. He gives Aya someone to talk to, and is also helpful in many situations in the book.

Hiro Fuse

Hiro is Aya's older brother. He is popular in their reputation-based city and is invited to the Thousand Faces Club, which consists of the top 1,000 popular people in the city.

Frizz Mizuno

A leader of a clique called "Radical Honesty", where the members must have a brain surgery that gets rid of all deception. He becomes Aya's boyfriend. His surgery did not agree somewhat with the story as he was unable to hide anything, and it especially did not agree with Tally. She convinced him that he was not strong enough to tell the truth all the time (he took the surgery because he lied constantly, especially to girls). His Radical Honesty saved the day as a tool to prove to Tally that he was not lying about the Extras. At the end of the story, Frizz decides to give up the clique.

Ren Machino

Hiro's technologically gifted friend. He installed the mods on Moggle to make him waterproof, able to fly and carry Aya, and fitted Moggle with artificial intelligence.

Ellie and Sol Youngblood

Tally's Parents. Tally mentions that she had never been that close to them, though this is normal in the Uglies universe since the Bubblehead Regime severs family bonds at a young age.

The Smoke

The Smoke is an established camp in the wilderness, where runaways from cities gathered to avoid the lesions included in the pretty operation.

The Old Smoke

The Old Smoke was established by Maddy and Az in a remote location in the wilderness near railroad tracks. The Old Smoke was destroyed at the end of the first book Uglies

, by Special Circumstances. Tally Youngblood accidentally alerted Special Circumstances when she threw her tracker pendant into a fire, as a show of trust and caring for David and The Smoke.

The New Smoke

The New Smoke was thought to be a new camp in the wilderness, but the Smokies formed a partnership with the city of Diego and settled there.

Tally's City

A name is never given to Tally's city. It is north-east of Diego, and east of The Rusty Ruins. In Bogus To Bubbly, there is a map showing North America in the future. The rusty city nearest Tally's city has a building that closely resembles the Space Needle

 in Seattle.

Diego

Diego is assumed to be San Diego, but in the future.
Diego does not follow the Committee for Morphological Standards regulations about surgeries, and the fashion trends in Diego are very diverse, but at times bizarre to outsiders. The New Smokeys distributed "The Cure" in Diego, and partnered with the local government. Diego supplies the Smokeys with the cure, sneak suits, a city to take refuge in, and removal of the lesions by a doctor in a safe hospital setting.

The Rusty Ruins

The Rusty Ruins are west of Tally's city. They have been preserved so that children can see what the Rusties did to the world. They are a gathering place for uglies who want to trick the sensors on their hoverboards. David meets up with potential Smokeys in the ruins.

Post Rusty Singapore

As part of the extras plan to launch a shuttle into space so that they have a smaller effect on the earth, they harvest metal from Singapore to build their shuttles. Aya, Hiro, Frizz, and the Cutters visit the ruins with the Extras.

Yokohama

Yokahama is the home city of Aya Fuse in Extras. The cities name is never mentioned in the book, but in early drafts when Hiro was the main character, he refers to the city as Yokohama. The city is not shown to have any rusty ruins near it, so it is presumed to be built over the remains of the modern-day city of Yokohama

New Pretty Town

New Pretty Town is where all of the new pretties live. They are full of parks, mansions named after famous people from the Rusty Time, and amusements for New Pretties after they've become new pretties. In Tally's city, New Pretty Town is separated from the rest of the city by a river, and the bridges report people when they cross the bridge. The exception is an older bridge, which Tally uses to sneak across the river and gatecrash a party that Peris was attending. Later, Tally needs a diversion in the city, and she tells some uglies about the bridge.

Uglyville/Dorms

Uglyville is made up of schools and dorms for all of the citizens from ages 12–16. The uglies are encouraged to hoverboard and play in the Greenbelt, and act out their random impulses away from all the other age groups.

The Burbs

The Burbs are home to Late Pretties, Middle pretties and their Littlies. The burbs are home to everyone except uglies living in the dorms.

The Factory Belt

In the prettytime, everyone has a "hole in the wall" where they can ask the wall for a piece of clothing/accessory, and it will give it to them. Certain complex items (like hoverboards, furniture and really nice clothes) had to be requisitioned from the factory belt, where middle pretties assembled the special objects.

The Trails

The trails are a bunch of trails and camping spots in the wilderness used by pretties of all ages for hiking, and camping. one of the perks of this camping was that if you got tired, you could call a hovercar to come and get you.

The Greenbelt

In Tally's city, the greenbelt separates Uglyville from the Burbs. The greenbelt is for uglies to act out their random impulses. Littlies are discouraged form playing in the greenbelt, so that they don't get lost or hurt.

Floating Ice Rink

In Pretties the floating ice rink over Nefertiti Stadium is mentioned as a huge architectural feat. Using a grid of lifters to support it and tiny Zambonies to keep it transparent it hovers over Nefertiti Stadium which displays firework displays before sports games. Everyone is supposed to wear bungee jackets in case the rink were to break or stop working which would have never happened unintentionally. But Tally, Zane and the Crims stage a breakthrough by pouring champagne on the ice to reduce freezing temperature and the putting stress on the ice causing it to break during the firework display (the safety fireworks are designed not to hurt people). The Crims act innocent but Dr. Cable did realize it was planned (there are no mentions of anybody else noticing the Crims never got in trouble).
