The story centers on two students, Rupert and Amelia, who find out that their substitute teacher is a witch. When she is around animals they possess the ability to talk. This also extends to Miss Switch's magical cat, Bathsheba. The children learn that Miss Switch's coven of witches has come under the control of Saturna (June Foray

), an evil witch who is out to destroy Miss Switch. Miss Switch asks for their help to stop her.

Both the cartoon and the book were followed by Miss Switch to the Rescue, in which Miss Switch and children get sent back into time by an evil Warlock. Miss Switch was voiced by veteran voice actress, Janet Waldo
