after the first term, instead of continuing at St. Clare's.

The twins encounter a very strange first year girl called Dora Lacey, but her strangeness is explained when her twin Daphne turns up.

Two new girls are starting sixth year, Morag Stuart and Phyllis Bentley (nicknamed Fizz). Morag is as stubborn as Fizz is friendly; making friends with Morag is hard, while Fizz is friends with everyone in the sixth form. One day Carlotta, a girl who has been at St. Clare's for a few years but once lived in the circus before coming to school, goes riding with Morag, showing her a few circus tricks and trying to befriend her. However, just as she is starting to "get through to her", Pat comes and Morag storms away because they both have become instant enemies. Later, Morag shares her problems with Carlotta and becomes friends with everyone.

Priscilla Parsons, a girl held back in the sixth form serves as the main antagonist. At the end of the book, she is expelled for all her cruel deeds to a first former, Joan.

Alison gets a taste of her own medicine when little Joan starts worshipping her. Eventually, Alison helps Joan sort out her problems.
