The Outsiders was the name of an Australian-German
co-production which was made in Australia in 1976. It starred Andrew Keir
as Charlie Cole and German Actor Sascha Hehn
as Pete Jarrett. It also featured other prominent Australian actors including: John Jarratt of Wolf Creek fame, Wendy Hughes, the late Leonard Teale, the late Ray Barrett, Peter Cummins of Sunday Too Far Away, the late John Meillon of Crocodile Dundee fame the late Megan Williams of The Sullivans fame, the late John Ewart (truckie voice over in Change of Image and Frank Kennedy in Charlie Cole Esq), Judy Morris, the late Vincent Ball star of A Town Like Alice, Jason Donovan's father Terry, Serge Lazaraff of Cash and Company fame, Peta Toppano formerly married to media magnate Kerry Stokes and David Gulpilil - prolific artist who is truly Australia's greatest indigenous actor. The series was shot in English and Sascha Hehn was dubbed

New towns bring new adventures and new friends and often villains as well. The adventures test the relationship of the two unlikely fellow travellers but Charlie's knowledge, experience and philosophies help Pete and Pete's trusty Holden EJ Ute is invaluable to Charlie who cannot drive.
All filmed on location in the real Australia (pilot episode is Sydney and political episode is Canberra - these are the only city shoots). The series had only moderate success in Australia but is still remembered affectionately. It inspired many German spectators because it portrayed Australia in a way that met their expectations at a time when a new wave of German immigrants was about to come. Their reasons were among others: many areas in Germany being relatively overcrowed, high housing costs and Australia's beauty.

Plot and impact
The plot was simple. It is Pete's 21st birthday and a lifechanging meeting with his grandfather Charlie Cole and an automobile accident dissuades Pete from following his father into the family's successful car sales business. Pete's father does not get on with his father in law and tries to talk Pete out of it. Pete eventually catches up with his grandfather in a hotel in Queensland and the two embark on a series of adventures involving working in vineyards, bartending, sheep stations, cane cutting and gold and opal mining amongst other things. Pete's grandfather is in love with the real Australia where you sleep under the 'shine of the stars' and travel with a swag and get work only when you have run out of money.
