The dictionary is unilingually Finnish and attempts to "accurately reflect standard Finnish as it is used today". It explains the meaning of each headword, information about its orthography, inflected forms, stylistic register, typical usage and context.

Scope

The dictionary consists of almost 100 000 entries. It was expanded and modernized from Suomen kielen perussanakirja (The Basic Dictionary of the Finnish Language), printed between 1990 and 1994 (and digitalized in 1997 to CD-Perussanakirja). Compared to Suomen kielen perussanakirja, the 2006 edition has about 6 500 new entries and about 20 000 modified entries. With Nykysuomen sanakirja
