The shopping centre was built in three phases of which the final one opened in 1979. In 1995 the centre was refurbished during which the lower floor of the former Co-operative department store was transformed into Ainsworth Mall.
As with many other 'The Mall' shopping centres, The Mall Blackburn has undergone a massive or 'monster' development modernization project.
