. The School opened in 1982 and was named after James Young, the famous Scotsman who patented the process of extracting oil from coal and types of shale.

Headteacher and SMT

The Headteacher is Mr Christopher Horne he is assisted by his Depute Headteachers Mrs E Jessiman, Mrs C Kendall and Mrs Y Lawton, the school's business manager.

The school

James Young High is a coeducational state school which has over 1100 pupils. The headmaster as at February 2011 is Christopher A Horne. The school uniform consists of a purple or black jumper on top of a polo shirt, or white shirt with purple tie.

Feeder Schools

The feeder primary schools are Bankton Primary, Bellsquarry Primary, Dedridge Primary and Williamston Primary.

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIE Inspection)

In 2005, HMIE undertook an inspection of the school. The inspection found that the school's pastoral care, partnership with parents and vocational guidance were all of very high quality and that the school had developed a "culture of continuous improvement". It identified weaknesses in accommodation and facilities as areas in need of attention. The report was met with positive responses by parents, who previously had doubts about how well the school was performing.
